Ross Mathews Scholarship

The Optimist Club of Hillsboro offers this scholarship to a graduating senior or home school graduate. Applications are accepted in the second quarter of the year.

The candidate must:

  • Be a graduating Hillsboro High School senior or home-school student (who lives in the Hillsboro High School attendance area). Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. And be US citizen or permanent legal resident.

  • Have been accepted to a 2 or 4 year accredited school with a major in human health or mortuary science.

  • Completed the application and have submitted a typed essay of 300-500 words describing his/her chosen career path and the events that drove the choice. 

  • Be available to be interviewed by the Optimist selection board.

Club Essay Contest

In the first quarter of each year the Club of manages an essay contest. Topics for the essay are provided by Optimist International. The Club's contest is open to high school students in the HSD area. 

Essays are judged by a local panel, cash awards are presented to the top three finishers.
